As much as I love taking pictures, for some reason I don't love taking pictures of "events" in my life. Maybe it has something to do with the hours of videotape I've watched of every single birthday my five siblings or I ever had at home. Or maybe it's the pictures of me from Christmas morning looking more like a homeless person than I care to remember. I'm not sure what it is, but I've been sort of "against" it for a while. Although I'm still not all about taking pictures of every single milestone, I'm at least trying to take more pictures with my family to remember fun things we've done together.

With this in mind, I decided it was time to give my husband's old 35mm camera a try. My 50mm lens fit just right and some film in my fridge was beckoning my name. Since I had no idea if the film was actually going to turn out or not, I gave Walgreens a go at developing/scanning my images. All things considering, I don't think my images turned out so bad! :) Maybe they won't quite make it to my wall, but I'm happy with the results.

The next two pictures of Gabe are actually from my very first roll with my Contax 645. I took the first picture and Gabe thought my new camera sounded really funny so he started to laugh (second picture). What an easy way to get a happy photo (albeit a little blurry. That manual focus is a serious skill)!

And one more from the Contax.

For anyone interested in the technical details, all the 35mm pictures were taken with my 50mm 1.4 Canon lens using Kodak Ektar 100 film. Ektar is a very red, bright, saturated film usually reserved for detail shots or especially bright colors. It is generally not used on people as it makes skin look somewhat ruddy. But, I had some so I thought I'd at least give it a try. You can easily see the difference in skin tone between the 35mm shots and the two Contax 645 shots (taken with Kodak Portra 400). I obviously prefer the Portra for skin tones, but it's fun to try something different every once in a while.
