I met Andrew “Drew” Stallings on the steps of PATH, People Assisting The Homeless, in West Los Angeles. They’d given him a bed and three meals a day for the past three weeks. I was looking for a story and he was looking for a friendly ear. He was handsome, clean-cut and walked as if he were going somewhere important. He always had something to say and when he talked, he’d get animated and jump to his feet, gesticulating grandly. I laughed at his performance and loved his energy.

“I am homeless. It’s a fact. Not a complaint,” he’d tell me on several occasions.
